Great work Richard – The Wiking went through a number of reorganizations from 1941 to 1944 – most interesting and little documented are the throes of transition that took place in the late spring of 1942 – when it underwent a very brief reconstitution before the summer 1942 campaign – for instance, most of the Westland regiment was ‘de-motorized’ and all of its vehicles handed over to the Germania regiment, in order for the division to have a minimum amount of mobility. Also, at the same time, the Westland was supposed to undergo conversion into a motorcycle regiment, but it seems that this never was carried through to fruition, because by the fall of 1942, it had reconverted to a motorized infantry regiment again (or a panzergrenadier regiment – I don’t remember which). Good job – love this kind of stuff – if only there were any decent division records from March 1945 until the end of the war – these are sadly lacking! — regards, Doug

Hey Doug. Thanks for the extra information, those are great details. I don’t have any of the SS division rolls and so had to rely on the Corps and Army rolls for information. I agree that late war records are sparse and many of my searches usually end in disappointment.
